1,2- you know what to do!

Good morning! It's Monday, about 8:15, the shortest day of the year. Looks like we have two relatively nice days and then the fit hits the shan as far as temperatures, plummeting into the 20s. But the days start to get longer from here. Trying to imagine here what it must be like in a place like Barrow, Alaska- our northernmost city- with several weeks of darkness every year.. None for me, thanks. I'll have Nunavut. Sorry for the atrocious Geography pun--well actually, I'm not sorry at all...

Music news. There was a post on FB yesterday by a friend of mine, talking about a movie, a music documentary, on Netflix. It was celebrating the life of Ma Rainey, and my friend commented on the lack of realism in the musicians' dialogue. They'd count off tunes in that old cornball way that's really only ever used by cornball white Band Directors: one, two, you know what to do. Folks, trust me on this one. Nobody says that shit on a gig unless it's meant satirically.

But of course there's an exception to every rule. Somebody piped in about their good friend Clark Terry using that old phrase when playing. My friend commented that Clark Terry was one of the few who could get away with it(and again, he was probably doing it for laughs--Terry was a great humorist as well as a great trumpet player. Loved Mumbles..). So then the guy brings out a laundry list of famous or semi-famous musicians, and this comment is addressed to me(!) I called him on it, and then the comment was addressed to my friend. Sorry Dave...

The guy was grandstanding  though. I can't stand name-droppers. I was just talking about that with Jennifer Aniston the other day...

As far as any actual music news, all I can say is I'm still practicing most every day. I've even been using my digital camera to record some things, but so far no winners lately. But as long as there's a new post or two every week, I figure I could do a lot worse. And if you know me at all, you know I'm kind of a feast-or-famine kinda guy as far as my output. Waiting for the next deluge..

Okay. It's Monday, but at least it's a nice Monday. Sunny skies always used to take a little of the edge off Monday- harder to despair I guess.. Anyway, thanks for stopping in and reading. And listening. Happy Monday to you, if that's possible! Until next time, I'm outa here. More later.

PS Today's pic was taken at the Carriage House, which is a terrific restaurant on 8th street near Lincoln's Home. Johnnie Owens, Mark Russillo, Ben Taylor, me, Frank Parker.
