Well, we didn't get what we expected in the way of snowfall, but Winter is still here. It's already wiped its big dumb feet on the carpet, and getting ready for another round--either snow/rain or cold or both.
One thing I do most every weekend is take my brother to Walgreen's for cigs and food and prescriptions. This is doable under any conditions short of a blizzard, but we both agreed that maybe he pick up a carton of cigarettes for the siege ahead. We're both getting too old and crochety to deal with this kinda stuff.
Music news. Still fooling around with a few Western Swing things. I wasn't sure how it'd go over on my YouTube page, being mostly straight-ahead jazz, but it was well-received. Not as many purists out there as I thought. Lots of likes, and two new subscribers. I'll take that as a green light. 392 subscribers at the moment- coming up on another minor milestone.
It's all good. I have some folks who write to me on occasion, and am always sure to send something back their way- even if it's just a thumbs-up. And it's a nice outlet for me. Helps keep me somewhat connected to the world at large..
One of the Western Swing things I'm planning on doing is a thing called Beaumont Rag. I actually know a few things about Beaumont, Texas. I played there sometime or other in 1985 while on the road with a band called Scoundrel. My few observations about the place were that the women all wore sensible shoes- and there was a song on the jukebox I was particularly fond of. It was called Ï Don't Recall Lovin' You'.
Obviously somebody slapped with a Paternity Suit. But seriously folks, Beaumont is also the birthplace of two of my favorite musicians: Johnny and Edgar Winter. Along with Clapton and Beck and Hendrix, I listened to a lot of Johnny Winter. With Edgar, I enjoyed Frankenstein and some of his other creations, but was most taken with that first album of his. Entrance.
I remember playing in a band at that time--1972 or so-- and coming up with what I thought was a great original composition. I played it for the rest of the band, and they just began singing the words to the Edgar Winter tune I'd gotten in my ear. Yes, I was crushed. But I recovered…
Well that's what I've got for you for the moment in the way of news. Much love. More later. PS today's tune is called Down Groove Street, and is on this album:
