Friday

Good morning! It's 8:40 this side of noon,. In bed at 11, up around 7. Geezer hours. Having been a lifelong night owl, it feels a little strange. But that just goes with advancing age I guess. I do like mornings these days though, since they're nice and peaceful, quite unlike those in my working years. No problems to deal with, and best of all- no morning people! Spoken like a true curmudgeon.

Music news. Some years back, deep in my working years, I worked with a publicist to try to get my stuff out there a little more. His name was Al Julian. Well-known in certain circles- some musician friends of mine had met him. And he did live up to his reputation. My CDs got reviewed and therefore got more exposure. He was a very generous guy, and sent me a number of recordings of people he'd worked with. One of my favorites, which I just re-discovered last night, is a duo album with guitarist Frank Potenza and pianist Shelly Berg.

These guys are both top-notch. Shelly Berg has in his regular trio a bass player who lived in this area for awhile- John Fremgen.. Frank Potenza was a student of Joe Pass. Maybe not the next Joe Pass, but he still plays awfully well. Recommended listening, separately or together.

As far as my music news, it's still the new album. Near-Miracle on 33rd Street.  This link will take you to various digital companies like Pandora and Deezer and Spotify. And you can listen to any of the tracks in its entirety.

Spending a little more time practicing these days, at least one good session per day if not more. In a slump right now, one of those Everything I Play Sucks periods, so I've been slower to post to YouTube. But I always bounce back. Having facility on an instrument is something you have to maintain, even if you've been playing for literally half a century. You have to work like hell to make it sound easy.

This is probably enough verbiage out of me for now. Like most everybody else, I'm watching the Election returns- and am, as Robert Reich described it, 'nauseously optimistic". Okay, thanks as ever for stopping in and reading. Happy Friday to you! I'm outa here. More later. .

PS today's pic was taken in 1985, in Dallas/Fort Worth. I was on the road with a band called Scoundrel. The other guy in the picture is a bass player/saxophonist who was briefly in the band. George Bussey Jr. Yeah, earrings used to be cool...
