Friday

Good morning and TGIF! 9:16 and 80 degrees are our current stats. Another scorcher on the way. TGIF means nothing to me now, just a holdover from working days. It was the message that greeted us on Friday morning. Thank God it's Friday.

Actually, my favorite acronym from that period was the POETS club. Piss on everything, tomorrow's Saturday- and piss on everything, tomorrow's Sunday! This was from a co-worker, and was pretty standard Friday conversation.. Kind of comforting to hear the same corny joke every week.

Music News. Learning some new tunes.. Alone Together is a great old standard I've just gotten under my fingers. Also working on Along Came Betty, by Benny Golson(who also gave us Killer Joe and Stablemates). Another session with Rob and Dave is in the works, and I plan to bring some new tunes to the table. I also have an original or two. So when The Sam Crain Trio finally makes another appearance, we'll have some new stuff.

Remembering a weekly gig I used to do with David Hoffman and a few others. Kim's Romany Club was the spot. A strange era. .Springfield was starting to get to me and I left shortly thereafter to play on the road. But Dave and I would retire a war-horse standard every week. They're still great tunes, but I do get tired of Killer Joe and Blue Bossa. And All Blues and Song for my Father. Crain raves on...

Dave and I had another gig, this one a guitar and piano/trumpet duo, where we'd have people call out page numbers, and we'd play whatever was on that page in the Real Book. This strikes me now as incredibly arrogant, but that goes with youth. Then again, we're both Leos. Probably the most arrogant sign in the Zodiac...

I still have yet to make it to the other side of this room to my makeshift home recording studio, but it'll happen. Just too damn hot to get inspired. Still giving the guitar hell on a daily basis, and will have a few of those sessions to share on YouTube. .

Another skimpy post. But with a few memories. Thanks as ever for stopping in and reading. Happy Friday to you! For now, ich bin outa here. More later. PS today's pic is several trio gigs: two with Bill Schlipf and Don Cochran, and one with Kevin Ellis and Don Cochran. Bill is still missed.

PPS today's tune is one of my weirdos. An interchange with three different voices.
