Friday the 13th

Well I'll be dogged. Somebody's stopped in here in the past couple days. A couple of somebodies. I have my ways of knowing. you know.

Well, okay, the stats as I sign in here show me any activity on the site. Some ancient Chinese secret, eh?

Music News. I have a gig next month. November 3rd, from 6:30 to 8:30, at The Pharmacy. Joining me will be Ben Taylor on bass and Matthew Miller on vibraphone. This should be a very nice time. An Art Gallery is going to be a lot quieter than your average bar/restaurant. Even the conversations will be lower in decibels. This will make it much easier for us to concentrate on the music.

One thing I'd like to get going is having a couple musicians come over here to play. Maybe once a month or so. For the experience of playing with other people(which of course is quite different from playing with backup tracks), and also to make some more tapes to put on YouTube.

I do have some videos on there with other musicians, but they're few and far between. Mostly just a boy and his guitar. And his backing tracks…

Re a discussion of sorts on Bookface the other day about the roles of various instruments in the band. The bass, at least in most popular music, is primarily an accompanist. Once in a blue moon, there might be a solo, but for the most part you're responsible for the groove.

Got me to thinking(and here's where it gets dangerous)that the bass in a pop band spends 98% of its time backing up someone else, and maybe 2% soloing. Its role in the group is similar to that of the Pancreas in the body, which spends 98% of its time secreting digestive enzymes into the stomach and the remaining 2% making Insulin.

The bass is to a band roughly what the Pancreas is to the body.

And speaking of the Pancreas one more time, I do have this tune I wrote some years back. At the Holiday Inn, Gene Grman's Happy Organs was the entertainment. “Happy organs” stuck with me and another tasteless song title was born. Hope you like the tune!

So that's my news on this shitty, rainy Friday the 13th. Thanks as ever for stopping in and reading(and listening). Happy Friday to you! Ich bin outa here. More later.
