News from Samland

Greetings, whoever-reads-this! It's Friday night, about 9:30. For at least 22 of my years, Friday night meant the POETS Club was having a meeting at my house. Actually, the meeting consisted of me and at least a few Coronas, and POETS is really an acronym for “piss on everything, tomorrow's Saturday”. And of course this could be extended to the next day of freedom: piss on everything, tomorrow's Sunday.

Working for the State for 22 years, I heard a lot of acronyms. But the POETS Club was my favorite..

Having been retired now for 10 of my years, I no longer have any sense of work-week or even calendar week. It took 3 or 4 of those years to shake all that loose. I do try to practice most every day, and exercise at least twice in the week, but otherwise every day is Saturday.

Music News. I've got the makings of a new album, which should be ready to go just as soon as I come up with a title and a cover page. It's all material I'd had sitting there, stuff I'd long intended to do something with. And you can hear all the selections here on the website, under My Wares.

This upcoming album is another one of my mutts, stylistically speaking. Funk and fusion and smooth jazz and probably some additional other stuff is mixed together. Lots of guitar and piano work. I was going for lyrical, tuneful playing, more legato rather than the usual torrent of 8th notes.

And I've got another collection of tunes, this one more straight-ahead jazz. Again, needs a title and cover page, and probably some serious remixing as far as levels. I usually go to Taylor Music in Pawnee for these remixes. and will probably be doing this one there as well.

As far as any upcoming gigs, I should be hearing from the Arts Council sometime before the month is up. Another Boone's gig for the Friday Night Jazz series. The dates are supposed to be for the whole year. I usually try to grab something in the Spring. Not a Winter person, so I'll see you in March at the earliest.

This has been a hell of a year. Domestic and health and family stuff. Things have settled a bit, at least for now. So as far as my music-making, I'll be at it as much as I can. Thanks as ever for stopping in and reading.  Happy Friday to you, POETS Club or not! Later for now.
