Swingin' Syllables

Good morning! Straight-up 10 o'clock from where I'm sitting, and a most temperate 74 degrees. It definitely hits the spot after all those swelteringly hot days. Blessed relief! I think there's even a Frank Zappa song with that title.

Swingin' Syllables refers to something I just posted on Facebook called a Beatnik Dictionary. I was born in '54, and just missed the Beatnik Era. I was just in time, though, for the British Invasion some ten years later. Maynard G Krebs was my first beatnik, but The Beatles were my first band.

Music news. A couple new things for my YouTube page, one of them a ballad. Blame it on my Youth is the tune, written by Oscar Levant. He was a pianist and Hollywood personality, a contemporary of George Gershwin, whom he idolized. I've never played any of his music, but I've read both of his books: Memoirs of an Amnesiac, and The Unimportance of Being Oscar. (A reference to Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest).  He was one of the more neurotic personalities of his time. I think if you looked up OCD, you'd see a picture of him.

Both his books are recommended reading. They're mainly collections of anecdotes from that era. Dorothy Parker was also around during Oscar Levant's time. There are a few of her gems in at least one of his books.

In other music news, feeling the itch to make music with other folks. May 6th was the last gig I had, and we were supposed to get together this last month to rehearse. The heat put the kabash on that one. And the Ocean State sessions haven't happened due I think to COVID. So I'm starting to feel the withdrawal.

I love working on my own, but eventually I get a bit lonesome and need to rub elbows with other folks. And then, after awhile, need to get the hell away from them and just work here in the Lab. It's actually a nice cycle, the best of both worlds.

So something will happen, always does. And I'll be glad to give you the particulars. For now, I'm still working away here in the Lab. So- thanks as ever for stopping in and reading. Happy Hump Day to you! For now, I'm outa this place. More later.

Today's pic goes back to last year. Late July, a rainy day that finally dried up. You can see downtown Springfield right behind us.
