Good morning and TGIF. That's the greeting we'd get every Friday when we logged in. Like most Springfieldians, I got myself a job working for the State. The good old Unemployment Office(or orifice, if you prefer). 22 years of service--originally 23, but I had that special day where I'd stood all I could stands, and couldn't stands no more. It's not what it was when I signed on, back in 1991, but still the best game in town.
I think every musician who has to get a day job should get themselves a government gig. County, city, state or federal. That way, when you get old and gray, you have health benefits and a little money coming in. You don't have to scruff for gigs. You can just play the ones you want to play. And you don't have to worry about getting sick.
When you get to a certain age, you shouldn't have to scruff for anything! Well, in an ideal world...
Music news. Tuesday, August 31st, from noon to one, downtown on the south side of the Square. I'll be playing solo guitar. Jazz standards and maybe an original or two. Hope to see you there!
I'm doing a fair amount of practicing these days, even getting in several sessions in a day. The goal is always the same: greater fluency. Always trying to get better.
At the ripe old age of 67, I've now been playing the guitar for 55 years! Many of the people I'm listening to are now younger than myself. Even Joshua Breakstone, who just turned 66..In some cases, I've been playing longer than they've been alive! If that doesn't make you feel like a relic, I don't know what does..
These blogs are, in their way, also improvisations. I often have no idea of what I m going to write about until I'm in here doing it. I guess the message, if any, is just I'm old but I'm still here.
Some musicians with a writing bent turn into philosophers. Not the case here. I'm more of a columnist. Sometimes life is good; sometimes it's not so good. See, what did I tell you?
