Good morning! 8:38 and 10 degrees on this i-can't-believe-it's-already Friday. Winter just took another big dump in our direction, and is now moving eastward. Fortunately, the only shoveling I have to do is the walkway up to the house. My neighbor has a snow-blower and does my walk as well as his, but I still get out there and do something. I kinda feel obliged...
Music news. Back on the stick with the guitar. I got in a couple sessions yesterday, and today is pretty much custom-made for practicing. Probably some more stuff on YouTube. I try to get a couple things every week. Got a solo guitar gig coming up next month, and need to prepare for it.
I love playing solo guitar, but it's a challenge. Unlike playing in an ensemble, if you make a mistake, it's your ass! So that, among other things, is on my mind when I'm doing it. It's fun every time I do it, but I'm always spent afterwards. Pleasantly spent, but still spent.
In other music news, I've been going over all the stuff I've recorded this year. It basically falls into two piles: smooth and weird. The weird stuff seems to be coming together easier, but I've hit a curious impasse. Within this collection are a couple pieces that are deeply weird. Too weird for even the weird stuff.
So I'm working all that out. My goal, as always, is some interesting music that takes you someplace.
And that's my news, at least so far. Thanks as ever for stopping in and reading. Happy Friday to you! For now, I'm outa here. More later. PS Today's tune is one of the deeply weird pieces I've written. Maybe concocted is a better word.
The title is from a dream I had as a college kid. This was 1978 or so. In the dream, I'm having dinner at Ralph Nader's house. As dinner is cooking, he's giving a lecture, complete with a blackboard and pointer. "We must view reality without bias", he's saying. And he draws a 9-point star on the board. He's solving various philosophical issues by placing them inside the stat.
So as all this is going on, the phone rings. I answer it. "What's for dinner?" Ïsoscoles Macaroni" was my reply. One of my weirdest dreams..
